About Kenda Kikuyu
Kenda (Pennisetum clandestinum ‘KIK203’) is a fast-establishing kikuyu with exceptional wear tolerance and the fastest recovery rate of any turf variety in Australia. It’s winter active, so you can enjoy a dark-green lawn year-round across most of Western Australia. Bred to be predominantly male sterile, Kenda produces far less seed than standard kikuyu — better for allergy sufferers and pets. With four times as many rhizomes as other kikuyu, it’s also the preferred choice for commercial applications and high-traffic areas.

Caring for your Kenda Kikuyu
Level and cultivate the soil to a depth of ~75mm. Apply a quality starter fertiliser before laying. Good soil contact is critical for fast establishment.
Lay rolls end-to-end in offset rows like brickwork. Butt joins tightly together and avoid air pockets between rolls and soil.
Water deeply immediately after laying and keep moist daily for the first 2–3 weeks. Established in 2–6 weeks depending on season.
Mow weekly in summer and less often in winter, keeping the height between 25–50mm. Never remove more than one-third of the leaf in a single cut. Kenda’s vigorous growth means regular mowing keeps it dense, even and neat.
Kenda has low water needs once established and is genuinely drought tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage a deep root system. Increase watering during establishment and through hot, dry spells.
Feed 3–4 times a year — through spring, summer and autumn — with a quality lawn fertiliser to keep Kenda thick and green. A starter fertiliser applied at laying speeds up establishment.
Kenda’s dense growth naturally suppresses most weeds. It’s also easy to spot-control with Roundup (Glyphosate) for unwanted grasses. Always follow the product label directions.
