About Sapphire Soft Leaf Buffalo
Sapphire (Stenotaphrum secundatum ‘B12’) is a premium soft-leaf buffalo bred in Australia for Australian conditions — and now grown worldwide. It offers equal or better performance than any other new breed of soft-leaf buffalo, with the added benefit of a finer, softer texture that’s a delight to walk and play on barefoot. Sapphire grows quickly with fast recovery from wear, has excellent winter colour, and develops a deep root system that supports its outstanding drought and shade tolerance — ideal for yards with both sunny and shaded areas.

Caring for your Sapphire Buffalo
Level and cultivate the soil to a depth of ~75mm. Look for dark, moist soil with signs of bioactivity, and apply a starter fertiliser before laying for best results.
Offset each row like brickwork, butting joins tightly together. Ensure no air pockets between the rolls and soil — good contact is essential for fast rooting.
Water for 10–15 minutes three times daily during establishment. Buffalo has its highest water needs in the first few weeks. Established in 3–6 weeks.
Mow fortnightly in summer and less often in winter, keeping the height between 30–50mm. Never remove more than one-third of the leaf in a single cut — and a sharp blade keeps Sapphire’s soft leaf looking its best.
Sapphire has moderate water needs and is drought tolerant once established. Water deeply but infrequently to build a deep root system; increase watering during establishment and through hot, dry spells.
Feed 2–3 times a year — spring, summer and autumn — with a quality lawn fertiliser to maintain Sapphire’s rich green colour. A starter fertiliser applied at laying aids establishment.
Sapphire’s dense growth out-competes most weeds. Important: not all herbicides are safe on buffalo lawns — always check the product label before applying any weed or pest control product to your Sapphire.
